Vitamins and Omega 3 Fatty Acids Prevent Brain Shrinking

Vitamins and omega 3 fatty acids have many health benefits which are well known to us. Most recently a group of researchers has found out some additional but very significant health benefits of Vitamins and omega 3 fatty acids. According to them consuming lots of vitamins and omega 3 fatty acids prevent brain shrinking, caused by Alzheimer`s disease.

Xinhua published the study findings in the online edition of Neurology. According to their report people who consume foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins, specifically Vit-C, Vit-D, Vit-E and Vit-B acquire more thinking ability than people who consume fewer vitamins and less omega 3 fatty acids.

While discussing about the sources of the aforementioned Vitamins researchers have mentioned some of the rich sources of these vitamins. According to them, Vitamins B, C and E are mostly found in fresh and colorful fruits and vegetables while Vitamin D and Omega 3 fatty acids are found in fish in large quantity.

The study engaged 104 people of the age of 87 in average. Researchers took blood samples and tested those samples to find out the existing nutrient contents in the blood of each participant. Researchers also assigned the participants memory and thinking skill testing. They also did MRI scans of 42 of the total participants. After the study they found that in general all of the participants had enough good nutrient contents in blood but only seven per cent showed Vit-B12 deficiency and 25 per cent showed Vit-D deficiency.

In another study researcher found that people who significantly live on diets rich in Trans fats are more prone to develop brain shrinking than people who consume less Trans fats. These people also failed to acquire much thinking and memory ability. Canned and packaged foods, frozen foods, fried foods, fast foods, baked foods and margarine generally contain Trans fats.
