Middle-aged women, who exercises moderately are much happier compared to their counterpart that does vigorous workout. The study claims that women, who does exercise moderately tends to go back for more workout.
A group of researchers led by Steriani Elavsky of Penn State University in Pennsylvania conducted the study on 255 women with age ranging from 40 to 60 years old to exercise either moderately or vigorously, then followed the volunteers to observe their reactions.
Overall, women who did moderate exercise were more feel energized and confident that they tend to go back for more exercise; also, more of them also showed reduce feelings of sadness and anxiety than the group that are exercising vigorously.
Elavsky claims that exercise makes people feel better, but if they are going to do it moderately then they are going to experience a much pleasant feeling. Especially, if those people, who are exercising have not exercised for a long time or are overweight.
She added there are activities, which let one talk in short sentences as you are doing them, but would not let you to sing.
It is common for middle-aged women to lack physical activity. Understanding whether exercise of different intensities has dissimilar effects on mood and whether these foresee overall physical activity in middle-life women is a significant question that needs to be address.
Elavsky and colleagues at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey studied the 255 women, who were not under hormone therapy and who kept a daily diary of actions and feelings for the past two weeks. She then presented the result at the North American Menopause Society meeting in Washington D.C.
At the start of the study, the women finished two bouts of moderate or vigorous exercise. The vigorous workout involved exercises such as walking on a treadmill till they can not walk anymore, and moderate exercise involved a 30-minute session, also on a treadmill at a pace the women able to do it easily. The women selected the pace themselves.
All f the participants wore accelerometer during the study. The device connected to them is a small device the size of a match box, so that it could track their energy usage and their time spent in activities of varying intensities.
The study proves that moderate intensity exercise caused more women to be in a better mood after the study.
The participants who were doing vigorous exercises showed smaller benefits to mood, and those who were overweight or people that are suffering from illness report that they get agitated easily.
