Nearly 62.4 million people of the total population of India are suffering from diabetics and another 77.2 million are in a pre diabetes stage, a recent study of Indian Council of Medical Research and India Diabetes says. The result came out when the study was conducted in four states of India Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Chandigarh, representing the North, South, East and west regions of India. Indian Council of Medical Research and India Diabetes has figured out that there were a total number of 40.9 million people suffering from diabetics by 2007 while back in 2000 the number was 31.7 million.

Madras Diabetic Research Foundation President and Diabetics Research Chief Dr. V. Mohan estimated and asserted that by 2010 up to 50.8 million people would be suffering from diabetes. He had also mentioned the number of 11.6 million people, who were afflicted with diabetes in the previous year.

According to the study the dominance of diabetes among the people of urban areas was the maximum in Chandigarh among the four states under the range of the study. The number of people afflicted by the disease in Chandigarh was 14.2 percent in urban areas and 8.3 percent i.e., 1.2 million diabetic people of the total in rural areas.

In order to have the second maximum number of diabetes people in rural areas Tamil Nadu came second in the list. Total 13.7 percent of people were diabetic in the urban areas of Tamil Nadu while the number was 7.8 percent in rural areas, therefore the 4.8 million of the total.

In Jharkhand the percentage in urban areas was 13.5 and in rural areas 3 percent, which meant the 0.96 million of the total number of people affected.

The prevalence in the urban areas of Maharashtra was of 10.9 percent while in rural areas it was 6.5 percent making the 6 million of the total.

The study also reports that there were 39 lakh people in Tamil Nadu, 15 lakh in Jharkhand, 92 lakh in Maharashtra and 1.3 lakh people in Chandigarh who were in the pre diabetic stage.
