Low Fat Diet Can Be a Guard against Alzheimer

Stay fit to stay away from Alzheimer’s disease

Staying fit and maintaining healthy weight can save you against Alzheimer’s disease, according to latest findings. The study was conducted by the head of Alzheimer’s Research, Dr. Simon Ridley. The study found a direct correlation between a low fat diet and incidence of signs of Alzheimer’s disease. People who eat foods that are rich in saturated fats are more likely to develop the diseases. Those who shifted to low fat diets from high fat diets were found to slow down the development of the disease. The study carried out

Alzheimer’s disease is a disease that strikes people over sixty years of age. In keeping with this fact, forty-nine people of age above sixty years were selected for the study. Among those selected, no history or beginning of brain decline was found in twenty participants. The remaining showed slight brain decline in a condition called mild cognitive impairment or MCI. This condition is known to be an early indicator of Alzheimer’s disease. For the study, some participants were put on a low fat diet while others were out on a high fat diet irrespective of their brain status. After the research of four weeks, the biomarkers were studied to observe the effect of diet on brain capacity.

Results of the study

Since diet was recommended randomly in the group, researchers were able to study symptoms of Alzheimer’s collectively. In the low fat group of people without MCI, biomarkers showed a positive sign while in the high fat group without MCI, the results were found negative. Similarly, in the group of people with MCI who were on a low fat diet, biomarkers indicated a decreased risk of the disease. People who were put on low fat diet ans who did not show signs of MCI were found to register an improvement in their memory power.

Conclusions of the study

As per the study, it was concluded that diet could have a major role to play in the development or control of Alzheimer’s disease. The movement of biomarkers was in the direction that indicated a reduction in the risk of the deadly disease.

Further study

In addition to the facts that have been brought to light owing to this study, further studies have been planned involving more number of people and a larger period. Further studies are required in order to understand in a better manner how diet and fitness affects incidence of Alzheimer’s disease.
