Violent video games make players aggressive
A new study conducted to evaluate the influence of video games on players has reinstated the prior knowledge that violent video games instill high levels of aggression among people. When compared to players who indulged in non-violent games, players who played violent games showed significant increase in aggression levels. The effect was more likely in children. Children who play violent games are more at a risk of growing into violent and aggressive adults.
The study On Video Games Effects
The study that led to this result was conducted in the University of Missouri by Bruce Bartholow. The study was carried out on seventy people, in the age group of 18 and 28. Participants were divided into two groups. While one group was indulged in non-violent video games, others were made to play violent games. The duration of gaming was 25 minutes, after which, response from the brain was measured to images of people in different activities.
Participants were also evaluated on their response to a fellow opponent when asked to scream at each other. The volume of noise was taken as a measure of aggression. It was found that participants who played violent games reacted more harshly and their decibel levels were higher than those who played nonviolent games.
Video games are good when played moderately
This study is a sequel to the dozen other studies that have been carried on along the same lines. In the above mentioned study that was published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, researcher Bruce Barthalow said that video games are actually good for the development of children from the psychological point of view. Games encourage certain types of behavior and abilities by awarding points and victories. However, owing to the fact that video games are nowadays more inclined to be violent, the aggressiveness of players is increasing. Among the different games that are on top of the charts, most of them are violent ones.
Video games leave lasting impressions of aggression
Although brief exposure to violent video games causes a temporary increase in aggression, addiction to such games can have bad repercussions in the long term. studies have also shown that the effect in long term is more pronounced when a person plays games.
When compared to watching violent movies or videos, playing games affects players more harshly because the level of involvement is higher in games. While watching a movie, a person is also a spectator, but while playing a game, the player is a participant in the violent scenario and a part of the game. This is the reason why video games have more harmful effects on the mind than other visual and multimedia modes.
Latest study underscores facts regarding aggressive behavior from video games
It has been long known that video games cause aggressive behavior. This is probably because the violence in the games taps into the primitive characteristics of humankind and generates a violent response to violence. With prolonged usage of violent video games, several changes occur in the mental set up and psychology of a player.
